District High Memorial Steps 

Former Patea District High School Steps

Originally, the memorial steps and an avenue to Egmont St gates, which was opened by Governor-General Lord Jellicoe on 27 October 1922 [sic?].

[Strangely, there is no report of the unveiling ceremony on the 27 October 1922 as recorded on the plaque - but Jellicoe did drive from Whanganui to New Plymouth - via the coastal road - on 27 October 1921 (See Evening Post, 21 Oct 1921). He unveiled the memorials at Manaia, Auroa and Opunake during the trip.]

  The memorial is to Lieutenant George A Robbie, the district school's headmaster (KIA 22 July 1917 - See Cenotaph Document below ) and the past pupils (un-named) who also fell.
