Fonterra - Tirau

Established in 1933, Fonterra’s Tirau site originally manufactured butter. Today, the site manufactures lactic casein, lactalbumin and ethanol, producing 11,400 tonnes a year for domestic and international markets.

The site processes up to 2.9 million litres of milk per day from farmer shareholders’ farms around the Waikato, and typically operates during the peak of the season from August to December.

Tirau is Fonterra’s only New Zealand site that manufactures lactalbumin, producing 1400 tonnes per year. Lactalbumin is a whey protein used in nutritional applications.

The site produces both edible and technical casein, manufacturing about 7000 tonnes per year for export to the USA, China, Japan and Europe.

Community and Sustainability

Fonterra Tirau plays a big role in the South Waikato community. The site hosts regular neighbourhood clean-ups and supports the volunteer fire brigade.

Methane (bio-gas) generated from the site’s anaerobic waste water treatment pond is used to partially fuel the site’s boilers. Fonterra Tirau has one of the biggest waste water treatment plants in the Southern Hemisphere and supports other sites in the region.
