Stratford Farmers' Cheese Store  

Stratford Farmers' Co-op Cheese Store

The Stratford Co-op cheese store is near the site of the former Toko railway station at the end of Station Road. It was built in 1918 at the same time as the Huinga cheese factory (See Topic below) The factory shows many architectural features in common with those of the store and the same architect/builder may have been responsible for both.

Over the years the cheese store has been used for gymnastics classes, wrestling, rugby training and as a scout hall. During World War II it became a base for the Toko & Douglas section of the Home Guard. (David Walter pers comm)
