New Plymouth Opera House/TSB Showplace

Devon Street, New Plymouth

One of Bates' most acclaimed buildings, the Opera House's acoustics have been described as some of the best in New Zealand.

Now renamed TSB Showplace, the complex was upgraded and substantial additions made in 1997-98.

The Opera House was built on the site of the Theatre Royal which, along with many other buildings on the block, was destroyed  by fire on 22 July 1916 (See Images below)

A permit for the construction of the present Opera House was granted to Taranaki Amusements on May 9th 1924 - J & T Julian were the contractors, with the estimated construction cost being £23,000.

Plans held by Puke Ariki - M7/9
