Mrs Climo's first name was Jane (nee Phillips). She came from the St. Kew parish in Cornwall, which was where she married James Booking Climo on 30 October 1841. She was the eldest daughter of a Cornish farmer, John Phillips.
Her widowed mother Ann Phillips sailed with her and her husband James Climo on the William Bryan along with her 5 other children: Ann, Richard, Emma, Mary & John. Ann Phillips Jnr married John James aboard the William Bryan on 18 January 1841, having to borrow Jane's wedding ring for the occasion.
Jane was pregnant with her first child when she & James landed at Moturoa on 31 March 1841 and Elizabeth Catherine Climo (later Pope), was the first Pakeha/European baby born in the new settlement of New Plymouth. It is said that the local Maori were so enamoured with this white-skinned baby that their chief gifted a plot of land to the new baby girl.
She and James lived in Kawhia for a time before returning to New Plymouth, only to be evacuated during the Taranaki Land Wars. The Climo and Pope families went to Marlborough (Elizabeth Catherine had married George Pope in 1857), abandoning their farm at Tataraimaka (present day SH45 and Timaru Road).
Whilst living in the Wakamarina area, Jane and her daughter, Elizabeth Catherine found gold whilst washing their sheets in the Wakamarina River. (The NZ gold rush wasn't to start for a few years yet). There is a monument erected near the site that was erected in the late 70's by Climo descendants.
Jane and James moved to Ormond, near Gisborne for a time, which is where Jane's health began to decline. She and James moved back to Inglewood after a great fire wiped out the Climo sawmill in Ormond.
Jane died of chronic Bronchitis in Inglewood on 01 July 1883 and is buried in Inglewood Cemetery.
Jane Climo and James Climo are my 4th great-grandparents and I am a direct descendant of their first-born daughter, Elizabeth Catherine Climo (Pope).
