Archibald Hood 

 Archibald Hood arrived in New Zealand as a Sergeant-Major with the Royal Artillery in 1861 and was later awarded service medals for Crimea and New Zealand. He was discharged in New Plymouth after a military service of 21 years. 

As an R A veteran he was selected to unveil the Royal Artillery hatchment at St Mary's in 1909 (See Documents below) He died, aged 89 [tombstone] or 87 [death notice] 2 January 1913 and is buried, with his wife Mary, in Te Henui Cemetery (Anglican Block B Row 32)

In the 1880s and 90s he published four small booklets which were printed locally by the Taranaki Herald or Thomas Avery Ltd.

Archibald Hood was also well-known at the time for his patriotic poetry - some of which were published in the Taranaki Herald ( See Documents below)

 He is, though, best-remembered for his gift  of a maze, composed of 3-4000 boxthorn plants, to Pukekura Park in 1892 (See: Hutchinson, Ian: Magazine of Friends of Pukekura Park, Vol 11 #3, 2016.)

Archibald married Mary Hoskin (nee Lye) after her husband died in 1860. Mary was a successful local business woman running Victoria House - a general store and grocery. (See Te Ara Biography in Documents below) Mary died in 1902 and is buried in Te Henui Cemetery.
