The submission by the Society on report by Aranovus Ltd "A Socio-economic Impact Assessment of Fishers: Proposed Options to Mitigate Fishing Threats to Hector’s and Maui’s Dolphins". The report investigated social and economic costs of measures proposed in the draft Threat Management Plan for Hector’s and Maui’s Dolphins (TMP).

Excerpt:

"The Society considers that if the level of economic loss detailed in the Aranovus report were regarded as the cost for avoiding species extinction, this could be achieved through compensation to affected fishers. We observe that most of the respondents were recorded as being in their late forties or fifties. Compensation may be a way to accelerate a change in fishing culture. The Aranovus report did describe the difficulty in collecting information, with low participation, and a resultant coarse-level understanding of economic loss and effect. Were compensation offered, more work would need to be done on the existing data, and to ensure that all the Fisheries statistical areas were properly assessed".
