Topic: Stainton Residence, 18 Beach Street (1919-20)

Topic type:

This attractive bungalow residence was constructed for Percy E. Stainton in 1920. Noted New Plymouth architect Thomas Herbert Bates designed the home and called for tenders for its construction in late October 1919.

A permit wasn’t granted by the Borough Council for its construction until the 29 July 1920 – a delay likely caused the severe shortage of materials and labour at the time. R. L. Roberts was the builder, and the estimated construction cost was £1700. The home is mistakenly entered in the permit register as being constructed in Record Street, although the correct section, no. 20, is listed.

Percy Stainton was secretary of the Pukekura Park Board for 40 years from 1919, and his contribution is commemorated in the naming of Stainton Dell in Pukekura Park.
