A permit was granted to G. Gleeson on the 12th of September 1927 for the construction of business premises on Part Section H, Devon Road, Strandon - H. Martin was the builder, and the estimated construction cost was £1000.

The building was originally constructed as a general store. Cafe/restaurant Zanzibar occupied the building for many years, before being replaced by another popular cafe, The Federal Store, in 2012.
