Topic: 3 Rogan Street (circa 1890)

Topic type:

Little is known about the history of this large home, although it may have been constructed for prominent New Plymouth land agent William John Shaw around 1890.

Part of Town Section P was purchased by William John Shaw in 1890, however it's unclear if the current building had been constructed at this stage. The present home was certainly constructed post-1880, with no structure indicated on Skinner's 1880 map of New Plymouth - a construction date of 1885 has been suggested, although there is currently no evidence to support this date. A DP dated November 1892 clearly shows the current building on this section.

The exterior of the two-storied home is in largely original condition, and is clad in rusticated weatherboard with sash windows. The steep gabled roof and exterior detailing give the home a notable gothic appearance - a rarity in New Plymouth homes.

William John Shaw died in 1905, and following his death, Mrs Shaw had the neighbouring home at 5 Rogan Street constructed.
