As a result of the Christchurch earthquakes local authorities in Taranaki and throughout the country are required to implement a plan to assess the structural integrity of many of the buildings in their towns and cities.

The New Plymouth District Council requires buildings to be brought up to a minimum of 34% of the modern building code. Customer and Regulatory Services Manager Simon Pickford has said the council would prefer building owners to strive for 67% of the code.
