Barrett Street Hospital Gates

The gates to the former Barrett Street Hospital are thought to have been designed by noted New Plymouth architect, Frank Messenger, in 1909.

A writer to the editor of the Taranaki Herald on 6 April, 1909, commented " With other ratepayers I have been considerably exercised this last week to notice that the Hospital Board has destroyed the fine hedge along the Dawson Street frontage of the grounds, and has begun the erection of a most expensive brick and mortar fence." It is likely the gates were installed at the same time. Funds to pay for the fence and gates came from the surplus of the annual "Hospital Saturday" fundraiser.

They are located at the Dawson Street entrance to the hospital and were awarded a Category II heritage rating in the mid-1990s.

As at late 2013 a heritage evaluation of the gates, the Dawson Street wall, and Baker Cottage is being prepared.
