A Photographic Survey of Wairarapa Dairy Factories - 2012 - 13
This is a record of 20 or so survivors – some abandoned and disregarded - of Wairarapa's cheese and butter-making industry which was an important part of some areas, particularly around Pahiatua or Carterton, in the past.
The images were taken over 2012 and 2013 during several trips to the Wairarapa. Locating the surviving factories was assisted greatly by Google Maps and Streetview.

As in other areas a complex series of mergers and amalgamations saw a reduction in the number of factories over time. One of the major mergers was in 1973 between the Amalgamated Co-op Dairy Company (Wairarapa) and the Ruahine Co-op Dairy Company of the southern Hawke's Bay to form Tui Co-operative Dairy Company.
