Brooklands Saw Pit 2019

2019 View: By Hamish Crimp

This saw pit was probably constructed sometime in the mid-late nineteenth century to provide timber for New Plymouth and surrounding farms - likely Henry King's 'Brooklands Estate'.

This saw pit is located just off the track, adjacent to a large Puriri and largely obscured from view by young Nikau and King Fern.

Saw pits generally only survive under areas of intact native bush on relatively flat ground, and are now uncommon in the New Plymouth area as most of the original bush cover has now been cleared and converted to either farms or housing .

Other surviving saw pits in the New Plymouth area can be found at Huatoki/Tupari and Ratapihpihi Reserves.
